When I got my mail this morning I thought you had forgotten me, but when mother came it changed the weather a considerable, — Well I am pleased you are taking so much interest in the children and that they take to you so much I really think you are performing a good mission, you ask my faith & prayers, you have had them in advance. I told Father I had done all I could & went as far as my wisdom & Strength physical, Spiritual and Financial would allow me to do & I left all in His hands and I feel satisfied and will be right, I tell you dear it is very encouraging to me to know you are acting the part of a wise and mother to my Children, God bless you and strengthen you in your efforts. You state that she says she would leave home if her ma maried B.R. The poor girl little realizes she is only at home with her father or the place he provides, Oh! that her mind could be set right on that point. love I know you will do all you can, but please don't go beyond your strength. Please keep me posted in regard to your health constantly. You state Ma had been feeling unwell, tell her to cease work & get a girl. If Ma should fail I don't know what I should do except you took the place & hired a girl & kept up steam. But I don't want to think of your being away so long. About 12 days more will be long enough to satisfy me except you really desire it, then I will round up my back & take it like a little man. — Of course you have learned ere this that I sent Sterlings things, also Ollies & Jennie's. All in Sterlings Satchel, which should have arrived last Monday Morning. — I am so pleased you have such a happy jolly lot & of boys and girls & that they have all taken the advice I gave them & are trying to be kind to one another, I wrote Jennie & Ma yesterday on these points ask Jennie to let you read it, I also wrote "our Ma" & sent her a V. I hope she gets it all right. Please kiss Ma & all the children for me. I feel that I can father all of them & will do so as long as they will listen & I feel they are all above the average in obedience. The sun is shining brightly to day & I can say truthfully it is the first day since I came home. My health is splended. I have not felt better for a month than I feel to day, so you can have no fears of me. I think of driving to the Temple Mill to-morrow & back next day another letter then I hope. I found my business prospering when I returned. Soon gathered up the reins & now move it before me. If there is any thing I have left out continue it in your next. Yes the Elders will be better prepared for their labors than use these who came first. We are making a general change in affairs. Elds Merkley presides over the mission, & will go to Winnipeg (if we get some money) next Tuesday & prepare for six elders to labor there this winter, including [---] Woolf & wife. Eldr Ralph & myself will be here in Branden, Elder C.F Jensen & Jr. Ellisen in Pontage La Prairie, these being the three largest cities of the Province. The Elders are all feeling well & working hard at their studies. What a pity, what a waste it is that our Elders dont make use of their time & opportunities at home! We need here well informed, well educated men as the people are near- ly all well educated and very religious, being pretty well up on Bible points. But we are gaining influence & friends & our hope for the future are bright. Tell dear brother Joseph to keep on with his music and dear moths, there is no danger of your requiring too much of the children, pardon me, but I think you lean toward the other side and on too indulgent. I would bless you not I if you had insisted upon my work at music when I was young and Joseph will do the same if you do not allow him to but pass these opportunities which are always fleeting. He should be eager but if not, he will ever be ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F4_I10_p004.jpg) thankful in after life for a little compulsion, He should have his regular practice time & keep up his work regularly, it is a sad thing indeed for him & the cause if such opportunities are slighted. I hope you will weigh my suggestions carefully for I mean just what I say in this point. Will you [-] kindly let me know definitely if I can depend on the rest for my ex penses here, so that if you think best afterwise I can try to make some other arrange- ments. I must tell you about our meetings. We had four last week (rained two nights so [---] did not go out), and Saturday night was our "bonner" out door meeting thus far, of course more people use [--] the streets that night than any others. We sang two songs & Elder Leishman prayed. Pres Thomas spoke first on "Free Salvation." He was filled with the Holy Spirit His voice rang out like a clarion and the crowd increased. He says he never spoke with more freedom. He only talked about 25 min and called on me. I felt very weak & had done so all through us singing but felt better after Bro. J. began to speak so I began and the Lord blessed me also. I was led to speak upon the history of the L.D.S. in going to Utah & locating in alberta. I never spoke with more power and boldness in my life and I felt that I could have faced the whole world had such been there. The crowd increased until the whole street adjacent to[---] hall was filled (the Police opened a passage on the sidewalk once). and it was with difficulty that car got through the crowd to go down the Avenue. The crowd seemed deeply interested & indeed, they were held by the Lord's Spirit. When I finished by reading our articles of faith and inviting all to our Sunday services, [---] and stating that the Elders would distribute our tracks as far as they would go, eager hands use held out to receive them and they lasted "quick". There must have been 3 to 4 hundred people there. On Sunday in the morning at 11am we had an audience of about 15. Elders Leishman and Rolph spoke; the latts never spoke so well before in his life (for about 4 min) and he enjoyed more of the spirit than I have yet seen him have since he has been in the mission. A few present started to ask questions & his re- marks were not very respectful - two gentlemen in the congregation both took up our side & one (a Catholic, who had come about 2 miles - from beyond the Exhibition grounds to hear this "strange" people) spoke upon baptism (the point under question) and gave our views nearly in [---] & seemed filled with the good spirit. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F4_I11_p003.jpg) [-] At our Services at 7 P. M. in the hall we had about 25 mostly ladies (please tell Sister Woolf Stoddard & Marriot) & had a good meeting Elders Broadbent & Thomas occupying the time in the "Personality of God" & the "Prophet Jos- eph Smith" respectively. Monday it rained & so had no meeting until last night- Tuesday evening on the street again. We sang his songs & sang them well too had gathered a crowd so we began [---] Elder Leishman spoke on our "manner of preaching the gospel" and the "Atonement." Again the Lord blessed us & we held our crowd who seemed much interested. Elders Ralph & Broad- bent gave out tracts as usual & as usual had chances for conversa- tions ofterward. We feel greatly blessed for the Lord has heard & answered our prayers & filled us with His Spirit in speaking to the people. We all feel encouraged & to give the Lord the glory - He has shown us that if we will make the effort He will certainly bless us. All are well. If we can raise up a brach of the Church here then there will be need for a pari of Elders here this winter & the rest can go into the states if our Pres. (Bro. Branwell) thinks best. Now about our business - from present prospects or the amount you say the Young Bros. offered $450000 I think that we had better hold on property in S. L. I cannot think of a joy greater than this to me to think we are co-workers with Father for His work of redemption in this dispensation O! I feel thrilled with the very idea. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F4_I2_p004.jpg) Please tell the young parents for me to try & think the boys are pretty nice too as well as the girl. We were glad to hear that the lots were sold we will try to meet at Conference & settle the little business yet necessary to placing the marker for Mother, Her wish expressed to me was "some neat-plain stone." If you felt like it I am willing to leave it with you & the girls & not wait till April to have placed. I don't know how Zeb will feel about that part of the program, but think he would be willing as also Willard. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F4_I2_p005.jpg) Now Zina about our future I am just as far away as ever, only I feel a deep anxiety for the best good for our many little girls more, when ever I give the matter a thought, The large percentage of out- siders here compared with Logan surely makes the change the strong incentive to do for the best for them; for where we leave love our very best, there the results must remain with Father & we are free, but that much is expected of us as parents for we both have always done that. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F4_I2_p006.jpg) I have written the boys about selling my farm up there but have received no reply to my letter. I am trying all the time to sell this out here & if I could sell either or both of them I would be able to talk definately & conclude at once which course to persue, but till then I must abide my time. We are trying to have the Lord guide us in all of these important steps in life as he has done here before which I ful assured he will do if we exercise a little more faith in this direction. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F4_I2_p007.jpg) Zina if your inclination leans toward Jack Lake do not let the Logan idea of mine influence you to remain there against your own wishes or to your disa- dvantage, for it-my part- of it cannot be realized till I can sell some land to do with. Ever since last fall I have ever thought what a lovely place for a house for family raising, of course I do not look for nor expect to find perfection any more than I expect to to take perfection with me. But the many advantages there seems endless to me. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F4_I2_p008.jpg) I have been down with the gripp for over 4 weeks, am now much better; Attending funerals often is also going among the sick. It seems so good to get a live or her from dear Grandma again. How enjoyable it would be if we could all be together once more! So often the picture of the dear little home in the canyon comes to my view, & I can see dear Grandma stand- ing in the north door kidding gravel-ly to one of her many callers. And then again the south kitchen whose dunked so hard to get through my studies seems to come before me. Our dear blessed Grandma! How much she has done for us all! It could be a blessed time if we could all dwell together once more, but we must seek God's Kingdom first and have the gratification of our own plans & wishes to God's own time, be it on earth or in the eternities. Our only care is the salvation of souls, our own faithfulness to the end, & the bringing of others to a knowledge of the truth. I have been riding nearly all day in the cart- returned home just [-]ush and found her gone to Mapleton - I did my chores and had just started. a line was sent for, to visit a sick man near Olivers. It is now 9 o,clock, but I will finish. Financially, Oliver & I have made nothing this year - so it'll not take much room to stow away for us both. Dimick is doing pretty well bossing a R. R. camp. Will is"Wiper" at the Engine house in Springville - has charge of all about it - does well and gives best of satisfaction. $6000 per month. All the family are well - there is a lot of us and more coming all the time. Jane has another girl - Nora, a girl and Lib a boy, Ella (miner) dont got hers just yet. The weather is warm as April. The general sunday school is divided into 4 - one in each Ward and as a matter of course I could not be laid up on the shelf to dry. Teacher of class of honor. [the following is written upside down at the top of the page] With economy, perseverance & push we will manage to live through the winter if the Lord will favor us as He has done before - we dont feel much gloomy when it is dark for we know that the clouds will pass and the day become bright as ever. O. B. H. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F5_I3_p002.jpg) Maby I will be of just a little use on earth yet - I think so because the Patriarch John said I would last winter when he gave me that most royal Blessing - Oh! what a grand time I did have while you was there - Royal sociables, blessed interviews and visits among and with Gods chosen and Elect - such another season of enjoyment for me will never occur again on earth [illegible deletion] You did it all - your very best for me - poor old me. Heaven bless you forever. While at your mothers before, and after conf- erence last fall - (this fall) - I had a rick feast of old and new friends - a feast of old times rehashed and served on new tin platters - the while time was a regular string of pleasing reminders. Much of it is in my journal, to become History. - Some will be impor- tant history. Very wondrful events and honors come and will keep coming to saints that will only half live as they ought to. Joseph used to tell of the honors and blessings that would come to the faithful - But he did not tell the half of what has been realised by many. Well Hannah has come - did nothing - all a fizzle. It is now 10 o clock - must go to bed and then ride harder tomorrow - must collect money to pay my taxes. Then next day will be Sunday and if weather is good must ride hard again to fil appointments in 2 wards Pleasant Grove. The wicked have to rest and the righteous are never idle - only a little difference. My love to that dear boy Sterling <& wife> also Joseph, the barefooted boy - Same to Rega and the 3rd Zina. WEST TEMPLE ST., SALT LAKE CITY 180 THIRD ST., SALT LAKE CITY NATIONAL WOMAN'S RELIEF SOCIETY "Charity never faileth." Salt Lake City, Utah, Feb. 11 - 1898 Mrs. Zina Y. Card — My Dear Niece, It is 2 weeks tomorrow since I left Springville and I have had a very nice time with my only living sister - the family of Huntingtons, that was, number few and soon they will be fewer - not that I have any premonitions - but according to common course of nature. Last saturday we went to Charatons and returned on Tuesday - had a splendid time - couldn't have been better. While we were gone your letter came and Sister Langton forwarded it to West Weber and accordingly we have not seen it yet. I hope you will excuse my pencil instead of a pan - I can write so much easyer with it and have been writing considerable this winter with a pencil. Have just finished 40 pages nearly this size for juvenile Instructor, because it is hardly the class of Matter that would correspond with the Journal. The tone of the journal has gone up and it is hardly possible for mine to go in that direction; a man as old as I am naturaly goes down, physic= aly and mentaly. Charaton and family were all in good spirits and health as good as could be ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F5_I4_p002.jpg) under the circumstances. Your mother and I have not had so quiet a time, and so thorougholy oldfashioned personal visit in the last 40 years. About one caller a day - not more. On our way to Ogden we conversed with Brother Hansen and wife, from your place- said that Bro. Card would be down in about a week, but have not seen anything of him yet. We will be glad to see him when he comes. Got no housekeeper just now, so we are kind of "Batching it" ourselves. My folks were all well the last I heard of them. All your relatives, here, are well as far as I know. The weather is turning to spring gradually - night freezes the mud hard & then the day makes it a little softer than before. Tonight we are going to the Theater to listen to Plaries account of his Arctic explorations, and see his "Lantern" views of Artic scenes. My love to yourself first and then to all your children, in succession from the oldest down. From your loving Uncle O. B. Huntington ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F5_I5_p001.jpg) [left page] Springville, Utah March 14, 1898 Dear Zina:- It is with pleasure I write to you letting you know we are all well at home at present. Grandma Bird has been staying at our place for some time she has been quite poorly. A while before she came out she fell as she was going out doors and hurt her foot quite bade, and has not been so she could walk around only with a cane for some time. But she is quite a bit better now so she can walk with out any thing. Arus the baby can walk all over and can say almost everything. A weak ago ma started to take wean him in the daytime [right page] and now she has took it away from him at night. And he has been getting along nicely. Uncle Dimick met with quite an acident a weak ago Saturday. While he was leading one of his mules he whirled round and kick- -ed him in his side, and hurt his lung quite badly. He has been in bed every since but is getting along as well as could be expected. We were very sorry to here that Cousin Sterling and wife had the misfortune to lose one of their children not long ago. Grandfather came home from the City a weak ago and left aunt Zina feeling better than she has been feeling. And he ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F5_I5_p002.jpg) said he enjoyed him self very much working in the temple and visiting with Aunt Zina. Us children are still going to school, but it will close about the tenth of April. All the schools will close except one school and that is the school Bird goes to it will not close until June. We send our best love to you all. Hoping to here from you soon From Your Cousin Prescenda Huntington ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F5_I6_p001.jpg) Springville Utah April 2/98 My Dear Niece Zina Y. Card yours of 28 [---] has just come to hand. I [-]ust returned from Stake Priesthood meeting at Provo and found your lovely letter. I will change to pencil - I can write so much easyer and faster & I am in a hurry to go to circle meeting. Dimick is so that he travels all around but dont try to do work - is progressing slowly and looks bad. Hannah has gone to Olivers to see his sick girl, Elsie. She has 3 diseases - sore throat, Brochitis & partial inflamation of bowels. The Docts say they never knew that complication before. The girl is 6 or 7 years old — is out of her head most of the time, but was a litter improved this morning before ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F5_I6_p002.jpg) I left for Provo - and while at Provo I took dinner with Dear Susie and had a good talk. She was talking her intended trip - you & her, on a mission through the U.S. she wanted to know what I thought of it_ she asked me the same last Feb. or Mar. when I was with your mother. Well, I told her that I thought well of it, and that it would be attended with greatest results of any mission women ever took, if you could go - but brother C. has got to know that it is right and necessary. I was in trouble when I went to see her, a she has offer= ed to help me all she can. I'll state it briefly and then close. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F5_I6_p003.jpg) Last Dec. I wrote an Article of 17 pages and sent to the Juvenile Instructor because I thought it would reach more young people than in Journal. I wrote an extension to it in Jan. and took it to Hugh Jr Cannon, Managing Editor. and asked him what he thought of the first? Had not looked at it but would that night. 2 days after I called on him had'nt looked it over but would take it home with him that night and examine it. Called again in about a week — "had not had time to examine it" I came home disgusted. When the 15 of March No. came out and no O. B. H. in it, I wrote immediately for both manuscripts ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F5_I6_p004.jpg) About a week after here came the first Article sent with no apology or explanation. I wrote inst- anter to send the other & received answer that it was in type. I refrained from writing so as to abstain from saying something I ought not. Todayday I took the one I received back to my dear Susie with all my complaints She is going to call for the other, even if it is in type. She won't give it up, he must publish both. I laid awake last night, I guess 2 hours think= ing of that dirty thing. It will all come out right but my pencil has made its last scratch for Juvenile. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F5_I6_p005.jpg) My family is well all but Olivers little girl. Hannah is nearly down with terrible cold, contracted at wedding of the boy in my Sunday school Class that was shot accidentally. He has just returned from a 2½ years mission. He reminded me of promise I made at time. I administered to him after he was brought home - that "he should live to show the scar of that wound to his children." I advised the Elders always to say anything the holy spirit prompted them to day however inconsistent it might appear naturally. Love to all from your loving Uncle Oliver B. H. Not long since I had a letter from that darling young man of yours - Sterling - and as he told me of his comeing home soon I did not answer it and say to him now thanks for the letter and God bless you with the fullest realiz= ation of your noble heart desires. I am thankful for the [The following is written upsidedown at the top of page] May 18- In my present state of health I could stand a journey to Canada and would enjoy a visit with you all most supremely but for reasons mentioned the undert= aking perhaps had better not be thought of. (This is Sunday afternoon) very cold & snowing with sun shine occasionaly. O.B.H. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F6_I9_p002.jpg) genealogical information received in your last letter. You asked if I have received my second sight. No - not what is generaly understood as "second sight", but my eyes have not grown old since I receive a Patriar= chal Blessing from John Smith at your mothers in 1897, in fulfillment of a part of the blessing and have considerably improved since I was ordained Patriarch Since that time I have seen a new hope, a new reason for living and to try to live. The whole world has changed and Gods ways and "great and mighty work has changed" or I have changed some little- I do all my own Recording ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F6_I9_p003.jpg) of Blessings but have 6 grand children that have done some writing of blessings for me. When I am feeling right well and the light is good I sometimes sit down to write without thinking of spectacles - and under some conditions I can read the papers or Book of Mormon & D - C. without glasses. Now today is dark & cloudy - raining & snowing, and I reach for my glasses, although I can write without them, and by geting close to the window can read your letter without them. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F6_I9_p004.jpg) You also ask if I could stand it to journey up into your northern Zion — for this America is all Zion. Zina, my dear, I hardly know what to say upon that subject, but I believe I had better say no. First – because it will cost a lot of money and I am sure you will not realize any recom= pense commensurate with with the outlay. It would be a gratification to you as well as to me but nothing in comparison to the expense and risk. You may ask "what risk". Well - you might have more trouble with me than on the occasion of your dear mothers last visit up there. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F6_I9_p005.jpg) Secondly – There would be quite a risk for me to venture so far away from home, with the necess= ary continued strain of mind in watchfulness and care to appear and act decorously as well to myself as to others. Here at home, I have, like most other people of my age (and some younger) fallen into a sort of "free and easy" way of carelessness and indifference to appearances, — that would not be a nice "carriage" to ride in all over the world. Card I am very pleased with your excellent letter of 20th inst, from home. Since 3 P.M today, (now 11A.M.) we have had heaviest fall of snow this winter and yet snowing – thank the Lord - We are all well except Oliver – Bless the boy – He was ordained Bishop last Sunday. 25th Jan. & has been sick ever since, in bed – I guess he will come out all right, if he dont he will die sure, He will have the prayers of some good honest souls, that will help him, I believe your premonitions of the "Bishop" my dear girl, were correct. Oh bless you. I hope President Joseph F. will tell you what I believe he will - well, I'll leave that. I am not feeling well today (cant get out) and was sick yesterday but made Oliver a long visit, bless his good heart; how I do hope he will magnify his calling, for the Book Doc. & Cov. sayes that they that magnify these two priesthoods shall be sanctified to the renewing of their bodys – and he needs it. Hannah has a cold that disqualifies her for going out today to get & make clothes for a dead man – a relative of hers. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I1_p002.jpg) Hannah is a little put out at you because you told us nothing about your journey home. Write & tell her. Well - last night - whether awake or asleep - I thought you were going to Otowa, without some of bugle or gong, and in a quiet way after arrival and viewing "the lay of the land" and "finding your friends" you was to give a series of Lectures, at highest price tickets, to crowded houses upon the life & labors of your father. "How he stopped the flour of the U.S. Army without sheding one drop of their blood, & made them sleep all winter in the Mountains His private life at home with his wives and children and various kindred subjects – such as his annual trips throu- gh the State – how he located most of the showing his general supervision of details in all matters for general public good." Such lectures intersperced with propper testim= onies might do great good & perhaps dry all the "wet blankets" on your property. I believe you are needed in Canada more than in "Mexico or Central America". You will get a call, though, some day, to finish up your beautiful life = career; I believe. If I had the handling of "Providence" I'd fix you up very soon – and perhaps in my hurry spoil all. Bless your heart I wish I could have seen more of your life, to tell you; or is, above my "ken". ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I1_p003.jpg) I pray my heavenly Father in your behalf that may always see clearly, and no dark cloud obscure your path, more than to just make you lean heavyer upon our Father." Heaven bless your children - they are all good. Now (2 P.M) it is clear and turning colder, & I am about 1/2 alive with sitting here so long, trying to tire this cushion - most effectualy - so now I will close this "epistle to the Canadians." From your loving old Uncle Oliver P.S. you left your big thick vail here and I sent it by mail to Phebe Beaty - to you in her care. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I1_p004.jpg) [stamps in top right] Mrs. Z. I received your kind in = vitation to join in your Farewell greeting by your friends in Cardston, but too late to put in an appearance which I would liked very much – I also acknowledge your letter apprising me of the fact that you were packing & selling for a move. I thank the Lord it is accomplished & sincerely pray my heavenly Father to bless you pretty soon as you never was blessed - pretty soon by = and = by – after you get good rest, and shake all the canada dust off. O! What a wonderful experience you have had – I cant tell you --nor you cant tell me. so let it drop and thank the Lord for what is passed. My heart is full of comfort that you are here again and I hope you will never see His royal Domain for a long time. I long to see you but sorrow that I cannot see you with full of joy and glee as before in times of yore - me full of joy and glee, I mean. Oliver is doing well in the Bishoprick and is building a brick house in the place where the Log - was. Bird expects to marry before long and so does Edith Childs. Jennie Dolten is expected home this week - has been cooking for R. R. builders in Cal. all summer. Two have been brot home from there in casquets. All my family are well. Got 2 or 3 more great grand children, and expecting. The weather is fine and crops good. Dimick is with his team on threshing machine. Sickness is increasing, from the long hot summer. I have been waiting and watching a long time (it seems) to hear from you, and at last I hear the un= welcome, in the lines you wrote, but the Father knows what is best for us all, and if we can feel reconciled to His will, and not bee too urgent and resolved on our own we will be well nigh like unto Christ, when He had the most bitter before him, and which He knew he must drink to the dregs. I have not power of myself to do as I would if I could. I was once very much, I believe , as CO.C. is and that makes you stand, in my eyes, as I Hannah did. Besides that, the love I bear you as of my own blood in part and the spiritul ties - - all makes my heart a[--]e for you - makes it bleed if possible. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I5_p002.jpg) Can you feel relief from some of your perplexing cares and troubles by reching Logan. May heaven sustain you both and clothe you with an experience ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I5_p003.jpg) that will make, or be, as a shield a helmet to protect you from ruin by coming events — events adverse or promotive of growth, expansion, power and prosperity. Please write and tell me how you left Sterling and Joseph and their prospects — also Brother Cards condition, hopes and prospects — give him my love and blessings, that he may be speedily relieved of his severe affliction. We hear from Anna quite often in Canaday, and through her, of Zeb- Chally and Murry — they all seem to be doing well. My family are all in pretty good health except the little boy Glen wh[---] been sick near 12 weeks - his lung still discharges large quantities of puss through the hole made in his side. He seems bright and senible of all in sight & hearing. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I5_p004.jpg) Aunt Hannah has been poorly for 2 or 3 weeks but is certainly better and is able to do her work by a little help from me. I am in very good condition con= sidering that I am old and broke down. Sometimes I say, when asked how I am, "just as good as I can be", learning them to give their own meaning to the words. Well I must close for tonight, for I dont rest well after hard studying or reading at night, or writing. Joel Rick has, or is soon to move back to Logan; I hope he and you may gain comfort & knowledge together. He & I are Book of Mormon Cranks, I guess. Nobody makes good advancement in anything except they become, to other people, Cranks or enthusiasts. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I5_p005.jpg) Wednesday Dec. 23 - The ground is covered with snow - Santa claus has his team hooked on and lots of nice things loaded, waiting for tomorrow night. If we could spend the time together as Oliver has things arranged, I would be pleased. Jane has had her arrangments and invitations out for Father, Mother, Dimick & 2 other persons over 2 weeks, but yesterday Oliver knock- ed that all in head and ordered his brothers, sisters, father, mother & the 2 Jane had invited, to be at his house for dinner, on friday 25th. You see he has a fine new modern brick house, and I think he intends to dedicate it, but not not a word was said as to program. I know they have int= ended to have a formal dedication. Today we intend to go to the funeral ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I5_p006.jpg) of a girl 11 years old who was poisoned with Arsneck whether accidental or otherwise has not been announced by the jury and Medical inquest held yesterday. It is now night We have been to the funeral – Bishop Anderson – Bishop Oliver and L. E. Egertson were speakers. The death was pure accident. I will finish this tomorrow – I am too old to be of much use – can read but little at a time – write only a short time – can work verry little – cant behave only in the old fashion way. I am on the list offered by the Poet who said [---] Gray hairs do not a Patriarch make Nor wrinkled brows a Sage; In Subtle ways we deftly take the finger= of age as, ceasing to love, forgetting friends when the Recording angel bends and writes He's growing old. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I5_p007.jpg) Thursday Dec. 24 - Last night I felt as though the Poet hit me - I guess he did some - I know he did - I can see lots of my failings and weaknesses, ie. wherein I am growing old and clumsy in mind and body - but that cant be avoided - we must "make the best of it" and keep on growing old to the end. I have been young as anybody and had my day - now I can look for the night, and can take it all kindly too. I will write the poetic lines over as one line was left out "Gray hairs do not a Patriarch make, "Nor wrinkled brows a Sage. - "In subtler ways we deftly take "The finger=marks of age. as- "ceasing to love - forgeting friends, "When the warm heart turns cold – "The Recording angel bends "and writes "he's growing old". ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I5_p008.jpg) My Dear Zina - when I first read them lines I saw myself in them so plain - so much of me, I shed tears. We are all feeling quite cheerful and try to take life "as it comes" & let it go, at that. I hope Brother Card wont fret over what he cant help. If he is old and feeble and diseased take it along with other events, and conclude that that the end cometh. My dear niece I pray that you may last a long time and raise your children. You all have my love and prayers, from uncle Oliver. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I5_p009.jpg) [Stamps on the upper-right] Mrs. Z. Y. Your letter dated "May 8" mailed on the 17th arrived here on the 19th and found me very poorly in health- Aunt Hannah just the same as me but at Annas' helping her out of trouble in connection with Dr. Taylor of Provo and as the Lord does all things well, He had planned it so that Tom arrived from Canada the day before, or same day, to witness the advent of another daughter All are doing well, notwithstanding anna fell over hoe in the cellar Stairway 2 days before. I have not been able to go over and see them yet but feel as ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I6_p002.jpg) though I may, perhaps tomorrow 3 weeks ago today I attended a funeral - caught cold which gave me a slight touch of pneumonia in right lung. Hannah has not been well the last 6 weeks, but keeps up most of the time. Olive has been sick with 'gripp 2 or 3 weeks - Oliver has been down with Pleurisy - was here last night and said he was free. Jane has been barely able to keep out of beed the last 3 weeks. Thank the Lord we are all alive and on the the improve. Tom tells a good account of Charitons boys in Canada - Murry has put in 100 acres of grain and and expects to put in the rest of Canada next fall. I was pleased with your report of Joseph and Sterling. Joseph dont want to get too near Murry for fear there ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I6_p003.jpg) wont be room outside of uncle Jerry Knights claim. I met William Dugall not long since and inquired of him how maria was. he said she was nervous wreck- had been sick a long time with nervous=prostration- was so she could ride out once in a while. Poor Bie. I feel sorry for her and especialy so as I think back to when she was just a little girl, 6 or 8 years old, and recall the wonderful resemblance she had to her father, and how I loved to look at her as a real type of Brigham. May God spare her - restore her as He has Susa. Ah! but there's something wonderful - incoprehensible, about her sickness and restoration. What is the Lord going to with her? ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I6_p004.jpg) He cant kill her - cant throw her away. He'll have to keep her and experiment with her — she is a good subject to prove facts and principle. You are another good subject for experiments - perhaps I had better reserve my comments until some time later when I am older and understand Metaphysics more thoroughly. I believe however that time will develop as many acute angles in your destinies as in Susa. I dont want you to think that I have kept up a straight string of writing since I started this morning, for it is now 4 P. M. could'nt do that. Yes I think Oliver is the best organized and educated for Bishop of any man. I say educated. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I6_p005.jpg) No body but The Father in Heaven knows his education for the position he holds, better than I do. He served as Ward Clerk many years under one of the crookedst ignorant, obstinate Bishops that the Lord had any use for. I was Ward Clerk at same time and sometimes in our "Reviews," I'd say to him "I'd resign". Next turn of events I'd say "well stick to it if you can, you have more patience than I have, and it'll come out all right in the end" and sure enough it did. That Bishop stepped out & Olivers Particular friend took the place. Oliver knew he was a good Man - a man of faith, for he and Oliver were among the sick together very much and wonderful manifestations followed their administrations. I am not going to tell of his ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I6_p006.jpg) faults and peculiarities, but I tell you that a real man of God can have some of the queerest ways of anybody. Well, Oliver bore with his weaknesses 3 or 4 years and the Lord sid "well I guess that will do" and He took the poor fellow up to a better position - just as He made me a Patriarch, because I was better for that place than any other. That is not boasting any on the last but on the kindness of the Father. When Oliver was called to be a Bishop, he repudiated in every mild way possible, until Pres. David John told him he had got to go in, or, say "I wont" . Oliver came home and told the family and Ella cried & Bird went out to the Barn as though he didn't want the family to see what he did. Presendia cried - Elsie looked queer and cried too ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I6_p007.jpg) just to be in harmon with the rest. I came in and heard all the news, and just laughed at them & soon had them mor reconciled - then I got the Book of Covenants and read the promise of Him who never fails, where He sayes "and he who recives these two priesthoods, and magnifies them shall be blessed to the renewing of his Body". I showed them what a beautiful oportunity for them all to help new that terribly old time[-] cracked rickety, rheumatic wornout body. They had the promise of God on the subject and I advised them kindly and I believe they Believed. I guess I will say "good night" without answering the rest of your kind loving letter. I am tired. Hannah is lieing down, asleep. Your own Oliver. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I6_p008.jpg) [stamps in top right] Mrs. Z. Y. I have been out hoeing in the garden and sit down, wet with sweat and my coat loose on my sho= lders and probably my ideas will fall on the paper like my coat on my sholders. I am not very strong in body or mind. I feel much like a fork full of dry hay in Canaday you know what becomes of that if a gust of wind strikes it suddenly. I am glad that brother Card is improving - Kidneys suffer & No, I dont think so. Waterworks like any old wheel, wears out and ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I7_p002.jpg) eventually goes to pieces gradualy, with me, its so. The stomach, with some, wears out and goes to wreck. That is terrible - but my stomach is able to take care of whatever I give it. I was at Provo yesterday - saw oscars Big daughter and we talked of Susa. Said she is well, most wonderful. Lula is home for the summer. OScar & wife were at Salt Lake did not see them. Joseph is in Canada again, farming. Good – The solidest men are farmers. Presendia & Eva - yes they are nice and good - how good or nice, we have no seales to determine. It is comforting and joyous to know that ones self is loved and resp= ected by 3 persons if no more; and especially 3 like Zina Phebe and Susa. Be a little careful about "raising the wind" - it might blow me where I'd never get back - I appreciate all your kindnesses, but will ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I7_p003.jpg) very reluctantly accept anything that lessens your means of subsistance Bless your generous heart, it's like my sisters'. Anna has given me another grand daughter - Moses Childs has given me a great grand dau son prospects are hanging allaround for more. Oliver had his house dedicated on his birth day - May 31 - - a very nice affair - his brothers & sisters - hers also, a few select friends, & some oficials. The Patriarch dedicated the house. Speeches & speches, like social chat. It developed there, No the surprise of some, that no two of my children ever had a quarrel - not a fight - nor even a wordy conflict. That is a grand recommend. Tom has gone back to Canada to stay a year and a half. Anna goes in fall. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F7_I7_p004.jpg) yes I think Oliver is a natural Bishop in his heart. Every thing is in good running order, in first Ward of Springville Second Ward (where I live) is to have a new Bishop - perhaps it will be Eugene Dolten. What a load that will lay on Jane. I cant write any more poetry like that last. you've got all there is like that. Hannah is only able to do her work. We have all had a ragged old time, the whole spring; for health, but better , all, now. My dear niece, I wish you the choicest of Heavens blessings whether in sickness or afflictions of any kind; that there may be, in all, a a quiet resignation to the will of Him that made all things, and feel an assurance He will do every thing for our good, as His children, and not for our hurt. I thank you very much for every word - and I thank that little man Rega for his nice letter, but I am not able to send as many letters as I used to. My dear Zina, I can not hold out any inducement for you to expect me or Hannah at conference nor indeed any of the family unless Oliver may be able to get away. His wife is improving a little, very little. The balance of family are reasonably well. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F8_I2_p002.jpg) If I feel right nicely at conference time I may possibly go down and back on Saturday, and Stop at Phebe's where I would hope to see you, Chariton, Phebe and Susa; but do not cultivate any expectation of such an event. Conference would be a secondary consideration. Five my kind Sympathies and love to them all and keep for yourself the old title given in your autograph album many years ago. Your uncle Oliver. Last May, I think it was, I received a letter from Historians office, Salt Lake, signed by Andrew Jensen and Joseph F. Smith jr. asking me to answer certain questions, with request that I give any other information connected with the matter - of the Prophets family - especialy young Joseph - head of the Reorganized Church. I was quite ill when I receiv= ed it but lost no time in answer= ing, which took me 2 days as I had to lie down frequently to rest and think & pray. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F8_I3_p002.jpg) Oh, that was 2 days of great anxiety & labor, but the Lord helped me both to remember & to indite. Had about 6 or 7 pages of foolscap when I closed - I was not able to coppy it but after it was gone 'I' was very sorry that I had not a coppy, as a past of my journal. I wrote to Jensen & Joseph F — in for a coppy but they have not recognized the receipt of either letter, which, to me, looks a little like a non appreciation. I was requested to make the statements in form of affidavit. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F8_I3_p003.jpg) I did not feel able to get up town but closed with this phrase "god bearing me witness" and thought that was sacred enough attest, as they said. They wanted it for the benefit of "this office". While you are at con= ference, if you can see either Bro. J. or J. F- jr, I wish you would try and find out what you can about the letter. If it answered their desires — was it what they wanted — there must have been something wrong about it, it seems to me, from their silence. ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F8_I3_p004.jpg) If they want it for justifica= tion I can not scruple to put a legal attest to it. Well my dear niece, I have told you the whole- and if you could read the letter I would like to hear your opinion. I asked Oliver if he was going to conference – he said – no. Beet digging will be on then & all things in commotion. Ella is improving a little - I just came from there. Last Sunday I was at meeting in Olivers ward and spoke of my knowledge ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F8_I4_p003.jpg) that Joseph Smith was Prophet of God — had seen many prophecies fulfilled, "and would live to see some very strange prophecies fulfilled". I did not intend to say that last remark – it just fell out of me — whether it be of myself, or, inspired, I know not - but I had no such thought before. However, I am going to live as long as the Lord wants. Am in no hurry to go, or stay. I wrote a letter to you a day or 2 ago and gave it to Earl Crandall who lives cross the road, to deliver, to you in person, but I want to say a little more upon the subject of Spirits of our friends that are dead. They (mother & Thomas) have dispensations assigned them and they have charge over many spirits there & are operating in a higher sphere than the spirits that are requi= red to accompany you and me. Though I can say of the spirit. entrusted with the care of me, it is probable, very few ever had a better, truer, or more dilligent guardian angel than myn. I know what I say ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F8_I7_p002.jpg) The spirits of wicked men and women who in life loved to do all the evil they could are roaming in the woods, in old houses, hunting dry places and any where they can do evil - while the Righteous are in fine houses employed at creditable, legitimate honorable employment connected with the work they love. We have just hired old sister Macock, the Mother of Hyrum Groesbec= ks wife and Manna Deals wife I am now going to hitch into the Buggy for Aunt Hannah to go up town and get a wedding present with the money Anna sent her to buy Jennie Dolten who is to be married at 6 o, clock this evening, to Samuel Whitaker of Springville. I picked your card up off the floor just now and resolved instantly to answer it NOW. Oliver and every one of his family ate dinner here today. Presendia had the card and was commenting on your remark about Presents, and I suppose she left the card where it fell on the floor. I am glad she did so I will answer it and comment slightly on your not bringing presents. I want you to bring your ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F8_I8_p002.jpg) presence to me. I am not very particular about the rest of the family geting any, but if you can spare them some of your presence I have no objections Please dont deprive any of your children of any thing by bringing presents down here as we have quite a sufficiency of necessary earthly comforts. After all, we would like to have you favor us with your presence at Christmas or as near that time as will be reasonable in consideration of the important special centen= nial of Joseph's birth. He had scarcely plodded along half a mile, when he was startled by a familiar voice from a horse on the opposite bidding a friend "good night." Who could it be that uttered that sweet sentence, he stoped, looked, but beheld no face, alas! it it was too dark and drear, but presently a form of a young lady flitted along on the opposite walk and was none else than a daughter fair. Yes one that he had often caressed even his first born, the one great gift of the Lord that made him father and to shout the sweet name of "papa", The thoughts of this man as he co[--]ed over this event were numerous and sank deep into his heart to think one he adored so much, one of his own flesh and ----- new page (MSS1543_S2_B11_F9_p002.jpg) blood should pass him by when he must not speak or else the little spark of liberty he enjoyed would soon be turned in tide, exchanged to that of a fellows cell, not because he was a thief or murderer, not because he lacked moral courage, but, because those that this fair one associated with were enemies to the truth, but were clothed with the partial garb of a sheep of the true fold but were hypocrites of the deepest dye, They were of that flock that would soil the stream and accuse the lamb. O, justice, hast thou forsaken this fair land and moved so remote that the Grand son of one that stemed the tide of the great American revolution must be treated thus. It occured to his mind that "sacrifice brings forth the blessing" and he resolved to await his future reward and acknowledge God Omnipotent in all things. On he jogged in his humble way turning corners and following by ways until he reached his humble cottage where he was greeted with a welcome from his loved ones. Only with his wives and two youngest children out of five could could he fondle and caress.
